As service providers develop business models for WiMAX they require key service enabling functionality and network intelligence to ensure profitability. This ranges from solutions to support VOIP to robust and economic Internet connectivity, and efficient multimedia distribution. In this session a variety of leading technology suppliers will discuss the salient characteristics of this service enabling functionality and the progress that the industry has made towards making it a reality.

2:30 - Thursday, September 27 WiMAX Access Points: The Need for Femtocells if WiMAX is to Deliver on its Potential
Guillaume d'Eyssautier, CEO, picoChip

An unfortunate fact is that broadband wireless doesn’t work well through walls. Carriers wishing to serve customers where they are –indoors- must therefore deploy femtocells. Analysts estimate 100 million people will use femtocells by 2012. Operators like Vodafone, Softbank & Telefonica are already deploying – but WiMAX requires femtocells even more than HSPA. This presentation describes the strategic need for femtocells, business case and opportunities for improving capacity & coverage, while reducing both capex & opex.

3:15 - Thursday, September 27 WiMAX CPE and Device Evolution
Moderator: John Jackson, Vice President, Enabling Technologies Research, Yankee Group
Panelists: Paul Senior, Chief Technical Officer, Airspan
Tom Jasny, VP, Wireless & Broadband Network Systems, Samsung Telecommunications
Sai Subramanian, VP, Product Management and Strategic Marketing, Navini
John Wissing, Senior Director Technical Sales WiMAX, Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices GmbH & Co. KG

WiMAX deployments are growing worldwide. But heterogeneous use cases present challenges for the burgeoning device ecosystem, including core technology vendors, device manufacturers, network infrastructure, and application providers.

In this session, domain experts discuss the market opportunity for specific use cases and associated devices. Examples of questions to be addressed include:

  • What types of devices have the most immediate market opportunity?
  • How will WiMAX deployments change the landscape for devices in terms of:
    Vendors
    Distribution
    Applications
  • What commonly cited WiMAX use cases hold the least promise, and why?
  • What are the limitations on CPE types imposed by technical implementation challenges (e.g. MIMO)?
  • What sectors, e.g. device, semiconductor, infrastructure, service delivery platforms, consumer electronics, internet- will see the greatest impact from non-traditional players?
